How to brief an interim finance lead

A useful brief tells an expert what must change, what must keep running and how you will know the work is complete.

Use this checklist before comparing profiles. It helps separate relevant experience from a senior title, and gives each expert the same starting point.

Start with the problem, not the title

An interim finance lead can cover an absence, stabilise reporting or lead a defined change. Those are different mandates, even when the title matches.

Describe the decision or deadline that makes help necessary. State what happens if it slips, who owns the problem and what the internal team already handles.

If you need transaction expertise, name the transaction stage. If you need cash visibility, describe the forecasting gap rather than asking for broad finance transformation.

Separate continuity from improvement

List the work that must continue: payroll coordination, management reporting, lender updates or the monthly close. Then list the changes you want the expert to make.

Agree which deliverable comes first. A reliable cash forecast may matter more than a new reporting dashboard when a lender meeting is approaching.

Give each deliverable a deadline and an acceptance test. Name the person who will review it, rather than leaving success as “better finance”.

Make the boundaries explicit

Clarify whether the expert leads people, advises leadership or owns a project. State who approves payments, signs filings and makes final commercial decisions.

Agree who handles bookkeeping, tax, audit and legal work. Do not assume an interim finance mandate includes every specialist responsibility.

List the systems, records and people available from day one. Flag missing reconciliations or unreliable data before promising a finished forecast.

Specify availability and the handover

State the start date, expected length, days per week and location. Include required meetings, time zones and any deadline that needs additional availability.

Ask for the expert’s fee basis, expected expenses and treatment of additional work. Agree these directly before the engagement starts.

Choose a review point and an end condition. Name the internal owner who receives the files, process notes and unresolved issues at handover.

Illustrative example

A brief you can adapt

This company, project and timetable are invented. This is not a client result or a request submission form.

“We need an interim finance lead for a 300-person manufacturer during a six-month restructuring, starting in November.

The first priority is a weekly 13-week cash forecast for leadership and lenders, with an agreed first version within two weeks.

Our controller owns bookkeeping and the monthly close. The expert will lead cash planning, review working-capital assumptions and document the forecasting process.

The finance director retains payment approval. We can provide accounting-system access and weekly input from operations.

We expect three days per week, mainly remote, with one monthly site visit. Please confirm availability, relevant manufacturing experience and the fee basis.

We will review progress after four weeks. The controller will own the forecast after handover.”

Read the shortlist against the mandate

For each expert, ask what they personally delivered in a comparable situation. Similar sector experience helps, but it does not replace evidence of the required work.

  • Which part of this brief have they handled before, and at what company scale?
  • What would they check first, and which assumptions could delay delivery?
  • Can they meet the required start date and weekly commitment?
  • What sits outside their proposed scope, and who will own it?

A fit note should connect experience to your problem. It is a reason to ask better questions, not a guarantee of an outcome.
